Shakespeare's Globe

Shakespeare's Globe

Set beside the Thames, this is a “best guess” reconstruction of a 1599 playhouse where Shakespeare worked and for which he wrote many great plays. It is both educational and enjoyable - after taking one of the 40-minute guided group tours, often led by an actor, you may well want to see a performance in this open-air theatre, which includes both seated and standing areas.

Shakespeare’s Globe is a world-renowned performing arts venue, cultural attraction and education centre located on the bank of the River Thames in London.

Founded by the pioneering American actor and director Sam Wanamaker, Shakespeare’s Globe celebrates Shakespeare’s transformative impact on the world by conducting a radical theatrical experiment.

Inspired and informed by the unique historic playing conditions of two beautiful, iconic theatres, our diverse programme of work harnesses the power of performance, cultivates intellectual curiosity and excites learning to make Shakespeare accessible for all

Performances seen by visitors experiment in many different ways with the original playing conditions of Shakespeare’s theatre.

Also, since the opening of the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, we have been able to present works written specifically for an indoor theatre and to offer a year-round artistic programme.
